Women's Game takes a timeout in final minutes |
Oneonta was cheering with school pride Tuesday, February 9th as the annual Battle of the Red Dragons kicked off at 5:30. The decades old rivalry between SUNY Oneonta
and SUNY Cortland is always a popular event on campus and perhaps one of the most attended sports event of the season. In order to get in the school spirit, each resident hall, as well as other organizations, come together in the spirit of friendly competition and paint banners portraying two red dragons “battling” it out for the win.
Curtis Hall Banner |
Katie O’gara is a resident of Curtis Hall as well as a member
of their Hall Government. I met up with
Katie at the game while she was there supporting her friend, and checking out
how her banner turned out and she had this to say, “I think it’s a really great
way to show school spirit. Everyone gets
really into the competition and we hope really our banner wins this year!”
O-State Red Dragon Dances at Half-time |
The stands were packed with other athletes, including Rob
Murphy of the men’s track team. “Although
we are required to come to other sporting events, as a student athlete, I think
it’s very important to support other teams here.” And it certainly was
important to support the basketball teams this year. The men’s team suffered a devastating loss
56-64. However the O-state women’s team
defeated Cortland 63-55.
I caught player
Leah Servedio after the game, “It always feels good to win but today was
different. Since we lost to Cortland the
first time we played them we need to win this time and doing that in front of
our peers was amazing. It was a tough
game for my teammates but they pulled through. You know it’s a good win when your coach says
that she’s speechless for an after game talk.”
It's always great to see such support and school spirit at this annual event and everyone is already looking forward to next year where hopefully, we will walk away with a win from both the men's and women's teams.
