Cortland Takes Real Red Dragon Title

ADIA WATTS--ONEONTA, NY

The Battle of the Red Dragons ended with a loss, but SUNY Oneonta's school spirit lives on.

At the annual basketball game between SUNY Cortland and SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday, SUNY Cortland's men's team won after SUNY Oneonta's women's team took the win earlier in the day.

Despite the 56-64 loss by the men, SUNY Oneonta's students remained in high spirits throughout the game. The Battle of the Red Dragons brings hundreds of fans every year to the Dewar Arena on SUNY Oneonta's campus. Fans come from all over the Central New York area and beyond for many different reasons.

One freshman fan, Tommy D'anna, said he attended his first Battle of the Red Dragons game for the great atmosphere and to support some of his friends on the team.

D'anna's friend and classmate, Kyle Shouler, enjoyed the new and improved Red the Dragon, SUNY Oneonta's fire-breathing mascot.

"The mascot is giving me life," said Shouler. "I approve of the makeover, he looks stronger."

Junior and resident advisor, Sarah Legros, said that she came to the game because it is a good way "to get to know my residents a little better. It's a great game to get to know people and hang out."

No matter the reason for attendance, the energy was certainly electric and tangible on Tuesday night.
