Daniel Fleig -- (Albany, NY)
If you are a local resident or college student of Oneonta, NY there is without a doubt that you have heard of or have been to The Depot Restaurant and Tavern. Even people from miles and miles away will either stop here to eat as a pit stop on their travels or actually just travel here solely to eat at the Depot!
The restaurant has transformed and evolved over the years tremendously. The restaurant and tavern went from being famous for bar food to completely revolutionizing their menu. Along with getting the bar food experience, everyone can enjoy a full, pleasant dining experience at the same time. The menu ranges from pizza and wings to steak sirloin and spaghetti and meatballs, pleasing everyone possible.
Famous Garbage Wings |
The Depot has become increasingly popular for their wing Wednesdays. It is almost impossible to be sat without a reservation. Some people even make reservations weeks in advance just for this particular night. The special includes 20 cent bone-in wings along with a 10 dollar pitcher of soda or bucket of beer.. They have specials almost everyday of the week. For example, on Tuesdays they have 8 dollar buckets of beer/large cheese pizzas and Thursdays include 40 cent boneless wings.

The history behind the restaurant is very unique and it explains why it looks so old fashioned yet classy at the same time. If anyone has ever been there you can hear the train go by from time to time which is behind the restaurant. Coincidentally, before it became known as "The Depot" it was known as the "Oneonta Depot." Over 100 years ago this same exact location was used to assemble people together in order to transport them to other locations by train. It was basically used as a famous "pit-stop" in the town of Oneonta.
When asking my friend Nick Marcella his favorite meal he said "Depot wings for sure," also agreeing with Gabby.
Judy Hurlburt became co-owner of the Depot and eventually the full owner in 2009. It has become a family owned business with two of her daughters working there currently, and her third daughter used to work there in the past. Her daughter Kaylea, is now the manager of the restaurant, and other daughter Kirstin working behind the bar. After being asked numerous times for Judy to sell the garbage sauce in bottles, the first bottle was finally sold in 2012 during December. Ever since the owner made that first sale, countless bottles of garbage sauce have been sold along with hot garbage, garbage rub, and barbecue sauces.
I asked my friend Gabby Rodriguez what her favorite meal was and she said "The garbage wings." It goes to show how miraculously famous and popular the Depot garbage sauce really has become over the years.
