Not Your Average Athlete

Mariah Johnson is not just defined as one of the top runners for the SUNY Oneonta Women’s’ Track Team, nor is she just defined for her 2nd place medal in SUYNACS during her 2015-2016 season.  She is much more than that.  Mariah is a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta who studies psychology.  Her friends and teammates describe her as driven.  Johnson loves her studies and is willing to put in the necessary effort to keep up with her grades and run.

“I love my school work and I try to focus on it as much as I can.” Mariah tells us.  She strives for better grades each and every day.  Mariah puts lots of effort into school because she believes that should be her priority while in college.  Her teammate and friend Alex Jacques tell us, “She’s always studying.  At night when were done with practice for the day she’s always sitting at her desk working.”

Being a student athlete is very challenging, especially for members of the track and field team.  Their season stretches throughout much of the academic year.  Mariah explains, “Our season starts in December and ends in late April, but we also practice and lift every day even when we aren’t in season.”

Mariah’s two events are hurdles and sprints.  She has had great success in both of these categories.  She is the 2nd place SUNYAC Medalist in the 60-meter hurdles and made SUNYAC All-Conference 2nd team.  Last year as a freshman, Johnson was selected by the ECAC as the Division III Upstate New York Female Rookie of the Week, after she won both the 60-meter and 200-meter dash while recording a personal best in both of these events.  Her coach, Joseph Reed, further explains, “Mariah is an amazing athlete.  She’s a very hard worker and has improved tremendously in her first two years here and I can’t wait to see what else she’ll do for our program.”
