Nick Henninger wasn't always the great thrower that
he is today. His Track and Field career actually began
as a runner and jumper in his sophomore year at
Rocky Point High School on Long Island. It was
towards the end of his sophomore year that he began
throwing for the team, and he realized he had a knack for
it."I love throwing. There's a lot of internal pressure
that goes along with it and it helps me perform to the
best of my abilities." He started gaining attention from
college scouts and coaches in his junior year, his first
full year as a thrower. This is when Nick discovered he
could continue playing throughout college.
"I was being scouted by a few schools, Oneonta being one
of them." When asked why he chose Oneonta, Nick said
"They were really close and have a great Track program, so
those were big factors." Now he's emerged as a leader on the
team, being one of the older and better throwers on the team.
He has reached the 45 foot mark, which is a major milestone
in throwing and in general considering the hammers weigh
around 25-pounds and 16-pounds. He also finished 2nd in a
county-wide meet back in high school. Now as his sophomore
season is in the final stretch, with only 3 meets left, he looks
ahead. "I just want to do the best I can to represent this school
and make it proud. That's what I strive for." This is evident when
you see Nick practice. He drives himself to make this next throw
go further than the last, trying to reach the goals he;s always setting
for himself. This is one guy who isn't going to throw his life away.
