Nick Henninger: Oneonta Strongman

NICK HENNINGER: Oneonta Strongman

BITSY KUEHN (ONEONTA, NEW YORK)

Nick Henninger

“I just want to do the best I can to represent this school and make it proud. That’s what I strive for.”

Nick Henninger is currently a sophomore at SUNY Oneonta, is a Computer Design major, and a valued member of the Track and Field team. He began his athletic career in his sophomore year at Rocky Point High School on Long Island. Track and Field competitions generally consist of four throwing events: javelin, shot put, discus throw, and hammer throw.  Nick began as a runner and a jumper, but it was at the end of his sophomore year that he realized he had the strength and kills for the hammer, and became an official thrower his junior year. “I was being scouted by a few schools, Oneonta being one of them.” Nick chose Oneonta because it has a great Track program, and ended up being “the perfect distance” from home for him.

Warming up

Nick usually warms up with a few hammer throws, and informs us that about 150 throws can generally be made in one day, or during one practice. The hammers thrown can weigh either 16 pounds or around 25 pounds. One of his greatest throwing accomplishments, Nick said, was “getting second place at a league meet when [he] was seated fourth,” and also achieving a throwing distance of 45 feet for the first time, which is a very important milestone for a thrower like Nick.

Nick has worked, and continues to work hard for his achievements. When asked what he enjoyed the most about Track, Nick replied, “It’s all internal pressure. It’s all what you put on yourself. Unless it’s a team meet, you’re really just throwing for yourself, and I like that.” Coming into the home stretch of this Spring, Nick has only 3 meets left, and works hard every day to continue to reach his goals.

“Push Forward.” – Nick Henninger
