Ruben Gil, 21, is a senior student athlete here at Oneonta State. He joined the track team after transferring to Oneonta at the start of his junior year. Since then, he has made his mark as an elite member of and great asset to the team. Ruben is extremely dedicated to both his academics and extracurriculars. As a member of the track team, he is obligated to follow a strict contract. Ruben states that he does not have any issues following the rules and regulations of this contract.

“Sometimes it can be difficult not being able to do stuff that non-athletes get to do. But I know it’s all worth when I place in a meet.”

Ruben’s dedication carries over to his competitiveness during his races. He makes sure to train hard so that he can be his very best at every single meet.

“I would consider myself and my fellow teammates very competitive. As an athlete there’s no better feeling than winning with your team. Losing is definitely not fun. It’s something no one wants to do. So I feel having competitiveness is essential if you and your team want to be winners.”

Since coming to Oneonta, Ruben says he has improved his skills as a runner. Just last spring, he and his relay team made it all the way to SUNYACs and placed third overall. Even though this is a feat that many teams wish to accomplish, he says his team is not satisfied and have many goals for the future.

“The goal is to win that gold. We have a very talented group who keeps getting better each day. We feel we’re very capable of winning it all this year. All we have to continue with our work ethic and the gold medal is ours. That being said we do have to take it day by day, race by race, and stay humble and hungry”

Ruben Gil and his fellow teammates are excited to see what the future holds for them. They believe dedication and competitive spirit will aid them into their goal of returning to SUNYACs and winning the gold medal.
